The tradition of Blessing the Bambinelli was first instituted by St. John Paul II. On the Third Sunday of Advent, the children of Rome are encouraged to bring the baby Jesus (Bambinelli) from each of their Nativity sets to St. Peter’s Square for the Pope to bless the figurines. This Advent tradition is a way for children to connect their Nativity scene at home to the celebration of Christmas at their Church.

As a result, on the third Sunday of Advent, December 15th at the 11:30am Mass, you are invited to bring the Baby Jesus figurines from your home Nativity set to St. Matthew Church for this special blessing.

Followed by each of the Sunday masses, Brunch will be offered in the Parish Hall.

Donuts, Pan de Bono, Bagels with Cream Cheese, Guava & Cheese, Beef, Spinach, and Ham & Cheese Empanadas, Corn Arepas. Coffee, Soda and Water. All will be available for purchase.

A Time-Honored Filipino Tradition Saturday, December 21st at 6:00pm.

Simbang Gabi is a devotional, nine-day series of masses attended by Filipino Catholics leading up to Christmas. This tradition was introduced by Spanish friars in 1669 during the Spanish colonization of the Philippines. Simbang Gabi is also known by its Spanish name, Misa de Gallo, or "Mass of the Rooster.''

This cherished Filipino tradition eventually became a distinct feature of Philippine culture, becoming a symbol of sharing. Today, the tradition of Simbang Gabi continues in the Philippines, and other countries where Filipino communities are present.

Here in the US, Filipino Catholics start their celebration on December 15th and end on December 23rd.

For this tradition, churches are decorated with colorful lights and beautiful lanterns to welcome the churchgoers or to add beauty to each celebration.

It is customary to have fellowship after the mass serving native Filipino delicacies either with hot coffee, tea or hot chocolate. A well-known folk belief is that if a devotee completes all nine days of the Simbang Gabi, God may grant a request made as part of the novena.

This year’s theme is Jesus, the fulfillment of God’s promise.

This year, our community of Saint Matthew welcomes the Filipino community of the archdiocese of Miami to celebrate one of the days of this traditional novena. Come and join us for mass, followed by fraternal sharing.

This year’s 2024 SIMBANG GABI theme is Jesus: The Fulfillment of God’s Promise

ABCD - Stewardship

Stewardship is a way of life; we recognize by faith that everything we are and everything we have are gifts from God. Stewardship is not a matter of giving a little more; rather, it is a way of life.

“Do not be afraid; just have faith.”
- Mark 5:36

Jesus spoke these simple words to the synagogue official before curing the little girl. We are all faced with challenges and tribulations daily.

Do we truly have faith as good stewards and place things in His hands or are we afraid and feel troubled?

-----------------

As of today, we would like to provide an update on our parish’s performance for the 2024 ABCD. Please find below a summary of our parish’s progress:

  • Parish Goal: $97,062.00
  • Total Gifts: $87,178.00
  • Gift Over/Under: $9,884.00

Our commitment to the 2024 ABCD as a parish is a testimony to our collective faith and the love we have for those in need. Though we have made significant progress, we’ve yet to meet our goal. Every contribution helps, and with your support, we can make a real difference. Please take a moment to consider making a gift to the ABCD today - helping us achieve our goal and offering love and compassion to those who need it most.

If you have not already done so, please make your pledge to ABCD today.
