Announcement from the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops

The Church plays a role in the promotion and attainment of justice and protection of the common good. Pope Francis noted in his address to Congress, “each son and daughter of a given country has a mission, a personal and social responsibility,” As followers and witnesses to Christ, we are encouraged to participate in public life and to apply Gospel values to our political activities. Our actions in the public square must reflect the values of our faith and demonstrate a fundamental belief in the dignity of every person and the sacredness of all human life.

A propose amendment to our state constitution that seeks to legalize abortion through the third trimester, including when the baby is capable of feeling pain, will appear on the November 2024 ballot. For those not fully aware of the gravity of this extreme amendment, it is important to understand that the language of the amendment is deceptive.

  • The amendment does not require an actual medical doctor to determine if an abortion is necessary to protect the mother’s health or if the fetus is viable, but instead allows and “health care provider” to make these decisions. Under Florida law, “health care providers” is not limited to doctors so even employees of abortion clinics who are not doctors would be able to approve late-term abortions.
  • Unlike other proposed constitutional amendments, the text of the amendment does not define key terms like “health care provider”, “viability”, “patient’s health” or government interference.” Without these definitions, it is impossible for voters to know what the amendment will actually do, causing countless lawsuits and years of legal uncertainty.
  • This amendment was cleverly worded to hide the fact that it would eliminate current laws and eliminate common sense safety regulations for abortions that most people on both sides of this issue support. For example, while the amendment allows for parental notification, it eliminates the current laws that require parental consent for their minot daughter to have an abortion, making this the only medical decision for which parents have no say. The bishops of Florida have urged all Floridians to pray for protections for the preborn and mothers in need, and to stand against the legalization of late-term abortion by voting ‘no’ on Amendment 4.

ABCD - Stewardship

Christ is poured out for us in the greatest act of love that the world has ever known. In His Presence is where we all find joy and peace, as well as comfort and consolation. As His disciples, nourished by the Lord in the Eucharist and fortified by the sacraments, we are called to be his witnesses in the world, to spread His love everywhere we go.

“But grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.”
- Ephesians 4:7

Each and every one of us has received a gift from God. As a good steward of His great gifts do we use the gifts to encourage others to be his disciple?

-----------------

As of today, we would like to provide an update on our parish’s performance for the 2024 ABCD. Please find below a summary of our parish’s progress:

  • Parish Goal: $97,062.00
  • Total Gifts: $82,718.00
  • Gift Over/Under: $14,344.00

Parish Registration +

Friday, July 1, 2022

To be considered an active/participating member of the parish and eligible to receive a sponsor eligibility certificate or a parish verification letter for your child, St. Matthew asks that you be registered in the parish for at least three months, attend Mass regularly and show a commitment to stewardship of time, talent and treasure. Attendance at Mass is the most meaningful way we model and live our Catholic faith. The use of weekly offertory envelopes or online giving are the primary means of determining if parishioners are attending Mass. Kindly place your envelopes in the collection basket each Sunday even if you cannot make a monetary contribution.

Registration forms are available online or by calling the parish office (954) 458-1590.

Registration is required before the parish can issue a sponsorship certificate for those asked to be a sacrament sponsor. You must be a registered, contributing member for at least three months before a certificate is provided.
