First Sunday of Lent

First Sunday of Lent

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In a few weeks’ time, at the Chrism Mass of the diocese, fresh sacramental oils will be blessed and chrism consecrated for use in every parish. Olive oil is the main ingredient of chrism, but olive oil with some exotic additives that change its character and purpose. Rich balsam and perfumes separate chrism from the pantry. Food no longer, neither is this oil for grooming or toning muscles. It has a breathtaking aroma that is both alluring and enduring.

The prayer of consecration is a good meditation for the coming Lenten season since it focuses us on the goal of our journey, linking it with the olive-bearing dove at the end of Noah’s stormy voyage of forty days. The dove signaled the birth of a new world, a society reborn from the wreckage of the old, drowned world of sin. At the end of our Lenten journey, the oil of chrism will be poured down in abundance on the brows of catechumens and infants, as well as on those to be confirmed or ordained. Lent puts us in touch with the hard edges of life in need of salvation, and the chrism of Easter joy redeems and restores.

—Rev. James Field

Stewardship: Managing God’s Gifts to Us

Stewardship: Managing God’s Gifts to Us

Do you get jealous? Do you focus more on the things that other people have than on the gifts that God has given to you? Are you pompous? Do you acquire more possessions to impress others? At times we are all guilty of these things.

Pray for more humility. Humility helps us become less "self-centered" and become more "God-centered" for the sake of others.

"He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed Him."
(Matthew 4:22)

In Stewardship to God, we should give our first and best of everything to Him: our time in daily prayer, our talent in participating in one of our parish ministries and our treasure to support the financial needs of our parish mission.

Planned Giving +

Planned Giving

As we enter the season of Lent, we are invited to renew our commitment to prayer, sacrifice, and generosity. Stewardship calls us to reflect on how we use God’s gifts to do good and seek peace in our world.

“It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’’ - MATTHEW 4:10

Tempted between the riches and power of this world and ser-vice to God, Jesus chose service to His Father. If we wish to truly follow Jesus, we, too, must decide to turn away from worldly power and riches and put God at the center of our lives. Lent is our time to prune ourselves of earthly things and develop and nurture heavenly things. Lent is time to repent living Stewardship and letting go of the other “gods” we have put before God.
